What should you do first after a car accident in Kentucky? What you do and say can dramatically affect the outcome of any legal proceedings connected to the auto accident.
Follow these important tips from the car accident lawyers at Schuler Law Office, Louisville, Kentucky car accident injury law firm.
• Stop your car as soon as possible and refrain from moving the car unless you are putting yourself or others at risk due to your car’s location. Unless you are in immediate danger stay in your car. Never leave the scene of a car accident, you could be charged with “hit and run” even if the accident was not your fault.
• Check on your passengers and Call 911 if you or any one else is injured. Stay calm and wait for help.
• Call the police, and refrain from entering into discussions of fault or blame. Assist police by rendering your account of the accident. Exchange names, addresses, telephone numbers, and driver’s license numbers with all of the other drivers.
• Obtain license plate and vehicle identification numbers.
• Record names, addresses, and telephone numbers of passengers and witnesses.
• If you have a camera, take photographs of the accident scene, the damage, and the position of the cars. If you do not have a camera, make a diagram instead.
• Notify your agent and/or your insurance company as soon as possible after the car accident.
• Leave a note with the name and contact information of all drivers if there is an accident involving property and the owner is not available.
• You must report car accidents to the Department of Motor Vehicles within 10 Days when injuries occur or when property damage exceeds $750.00. Your Kentucky driver’s license may be suspended if you fail to notify the DMV.
